Miis take stage in Wii World Tour

Activision's Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock may have drawn a less-favorable reception from critics due to its comparatively limited instrument set, but it went on to dramatically outsell its most direct competitor, MTV Games' Rock Band. With Guitar Hero World Tour, the publisher has addressed that feature deficiency in a major way by introducing a five-pad drum set, karaoke tracks, and a robust song creator, among other additions.

With those features slated to arrive for all editions of the game, developer Vicarious Visions has a few Wii-specific tweaks up its sleeve. RedOctane representatives confirmed for GameSpot today that Guitar Hero World Tour on the Wii will include Mii integration in the new Mii Freestyle mode.

Featuring user-created Miis and designed to cater toward the Wii's broad audience, the Mii Freestyle mode acts as a way to ease in new gamers by "giv[ing] players the freedom to play what they want, when they want, while still providing some guidance." Not unlike Nintendo's Wii Music, the Wii Freestyle mode will also allow for players to "air drum" using the Wii Remote and Nunchuk.

As previously noted, World Tour will also improve over GHIII on the Wii by offering downloadable content. Further explaining how DLC will be delivered, the publisher noted that players will be able to browse, sort, sample, and download tracks through a new in-game Music Store.

Guitar Hero World Tour is expected to arrive on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, and Wii this fall. For more on the game, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

Xbox360 VS Playstation 3 graphic comparison : Round 3

A solid year's gone by since we ran our last Xbox 360 vs. PlayStation 3 graphics comparison. The differences between the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3 have diminished with every passing batch of games, but some variation still exists between the two machines. Our first graphics comparison between the two consoles showed that the Xbox 360 looked better on most of the games, oftentimes drastically so. The second graphics comparison showed that the PlayStation 3 looked nearly as good as the Xbox 360 in some games, and actually looked better in a few as well. Now with both consoles well into their respective life cycles, developers have had plenty of time to figure out the nuances required to code beautiful games. With our third batch of games, the two machines seem evenly matched. The two trade blows on various games, each with its own set of advantages.

We've upgraded our capture equipment since the previous installments in the series. We captured all 720p images through an HDMI connection and then resized them for use in the article. The fullscreen shots are, of course, shrunk down to fit onto the Web page. The pixels in the zoomed-in shots are 1:1 representations of the original image captures, but cropped to fit our page width. We compressed the images slightly to make them more palatable for the Web, but they haven't suffered too much in terms of quality for it.....

Ninja Gaiden Sigma for PS3

Ninja Gaiden for the Xbox was a true modern classic. It featured smooth, challenging gameplay and amazing production values. It was, in short, one of the finest games of its generation. In 2005, its gameplay was reworked and expanded for a second release, Ninja Gaiden Black. And incredibly enough, the third time's the charm. No, Ninja Gaiden Sigma isn't a true next-gen sequel, nor is it a simple port of the Xbox release. But it does add a good deal of new content, both subtle and obvious. If you're a Ninja Gaiden enthusiast, you'll want to see the new chapters, reworked levels, and slicker graphics. And if for some reason you missed it before, this is a must-play game. The action is intense, focused, and certainly not for the faint of heart. It's also among the most satisfying in all of gaming and remains as awe-inspiring as ever, three years after its original release.....

Bionic Commando Update: Multiplayer Hands-On for PC

Capcom lets us try some bionically enhanced rumbling in the upcoming update of its platforming classic.

Have you ever wondered what would happen if a pack of bionically enhanced supersoldiers were thrown into an arena packed with weapons? If so, Capcom is offering one potential answer with the multiplayer mode in Bionic Commando. While we've covered the single-player game extensively since its announcement last year, we haven't had the chance to try its multiplayer mode just yet. This changed recently on a recent visit to Capcom where we had the chance to swing and shoot in the multiplayer demo that's going to be shown at Leipzig this week. Although the demo was a little on the thin side, with one level and one game mode, it gave us an idea of what to expect from the game......

The Godfather II Impressions - First Look for PS3

EA recently held a press event to show off its follow up to 2006's Godfather, an action game that dropped you into the dangerous world of the classic book and film franchise. Following Godfather's initial release in the first half of 2006 for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox 360, EA followed up with conversions to the new batch of consoles that hit later that same year and into 2007. Although it was fairly well received, the development team decided to tweak the original game's formula in order to have Godfather II offer a more immersive mob experience. We got a run-through of the upcoming sequel that offered an overview of the game and a look at some early gameplay. So far, it seems to be serving up what you'd want out of a game based on the mafia--crime and shooting, with some diplomacy thrown in......

Need for Speed goes Undercover November 18

The Transporter isn't typically positioned as a high-water mark for which a product should aspire to. However, EA CEO John Riccitiello did just that during an investor conference in June, saying that the next Need for Speed game, Need For Speed Undercover, would be a "much better game" than Need for Speed ProStreet. Rather than focus exclusively on racing, the game would sport a stronger mission structure and "narrative hook" akin to the 2002 Jason Statham action flick.

Today, EA officially announced Need for Speed Undercover for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, PlayStation Portable, Wii, Nintendo DS, PC, and mobile devices. True to Riccitiello's word, the street racer will feature a number of live-action cutscene sequences, and the publisher has secured the talents of starlet Maggie Q (Balls of Fury, Mission Impossible III) to lead its efforts. Ms. Q will play the role of Agent Chase Linh, who oversees players as they infiltrate the underground racing scene to upend an international crime syndicate.

As noted by Riccitiello, Undercover will feature gameplay that resembles 2005's NFS: Most Wanted, emphasizing car chases, underground racing, and highway battles. The shift in direction, according to Riccitiello, was possible because EA's Vancouver-based Black Box is no longer being "tortured" by a one-year development cycle. GameSpot will have its first impressions of the retooled racer next Wednesday.

Need for Speed Undercover is expected to drift onto retail shelves in North America on November 18, with a European release following on November 21.

Crysis Warhead Q&A - Exclusive First Details on Multiplayer for PC

First-person shooters aren't just action-packed games that let you play as a gun-toting commando. Often, they're also used as showcases for impressive new technology. 2007's Crysis was such a shooter--a beautiful-looking action game that pushed most PCs to their limits, even as it featured intriguing gameplay that combined heavy-duty gunplay with superhuman powers offered by your character's experimental "nanosuit." Now, developer Crytek is working with its Budapest studio to bring back all the action from last year's excellent game, plus more, in its stand-alone follow-up, Crysis Warhead. Warhead will also debut a completely revamped version of Crysis multiplayer known as Crysis Wars. We have the first details from multiplayer producer Eric Lagel and producer Bernd Diemer.......

Soulcalibur IV

When Soul Calibur was released for the Dreamcast in 1999, it set a new standard for fighting games on home consoles. Subsequent entries in the series have changed very little as far as the weapon-based fighting mechanics are concerned, and have introduced new features and gameplay modes with varying success. Soulcalibur IV is no different in that respect; the series-first online play is a great addition, but though the visuals have improved and the gameplay has undoubtedly evolved, it still feels very familiar. And that's no bad thing....

Parasite Eve the third Birthday for PSP

Release Date: TBA 2009 (JP)
Developer: Square Enix
Console: PSP
Genre: Action Role-Playing

TOKYO--One of the surprising unveilings at Square Enix's DK Sigma3713 party was that The Third Birthday will be making its way to the PSP. This third installment in the Parasite Eve series was originally announced as a mobile phone game last summer, but the developers apparently decided that Sony's handheld would be a good platform as well.

Square Enix showed off a short trailer of The Third Birthday, and although there wasn't any new footage or in-game screens, the narration gave us some hints as to what to expect. The trailer started off with a grainy montage using flashback scenes from the past two Parasite Eve games. The Manhattan incident of 1997 from the original Parasite Eve was shown, followed by the scene in Parasite Eve II where a lady turns into a neo-mitochondrial creature (NMC). The narration explained that NMC sightings had dissipated since Aya's adventures in Parasite Eve II in 2000, and everything was back to normal. That is until 2009, when an outbreak of new creatures called the "twisted" appeared. In 2010, a system called the "Overdive" gets created as a solution to beat these new creatures, but Aya is the only person who can use it.

Following the montage of flashbacks, the trailer switches to the chapel scene that was shown last year at Tokyo Game Show 2007. Aya is in a wedding dress and is walking up to the altar. A man suddenly appears from the chapel's front door and starts shooting with a machine gun. Aya turns back and takes out a handgun to return fire, and her wedding ring flies off in the process. We see it falling on the ground, with blood spilling onto it a moment later. During the whole scene, we hear a somewhat cryptic narration that doesn't match up with what's happening. "This is my gift for her third birthday as she wakes up from her lost past. She may be a gift from heaven, who can save mankind that's trapped in the twist of time."

The trailer ended there, and the words "PSP version coming" appeared on the screen.
