Game of the Year

Game of the Year Voting

Prior to 2008, GameSpot had handed out only four 10s in its history. In 2008, we gave out not one, but two. Our standards haven't diminished; rather, the general quality of games this year has far surpassed what even the most jaded player could have expected. First of all, we were blessed with a number of high-quality new properties, such as Braid, No More Heroes, and Left 4 Dead. Even more amazingly, several famous franchises were reimagined in ways that catered to series fans while embracing new concepts in terms of game design. Fallout 3 transformed the role-playing series, taking us through a desolate, post-nuclear Washington, DC. Burnout Paradise threw its raucous brand of arcade racing into an open world and turned the series on its head as a result. And of course, there were those two 10s. Grand Theft Auto IV introduced new concepts to the series, such as its uproarious multiplayer features, and it brilliantly parodied modern pop culture along the way. Metal Gear Solid 4 brought a beloved series to an explosive conclusion, showcasing a chain of remarkable boss fights and unforgettable action in the process. Both games are in many ways not just the pinnacle of their franchises, but represent what we should expect from each and every action game.

Choosing 10 finalists was difficult in a year in which dozens of games could have been deemed worthy of a nod. Yet after countless heated discussions, the dust eventually cleared, and one incredible game rose from the ashes.....Klik here to see Game of the Year

Wanted: Weapons of Fate

We check out the bullet-bending action in this Grin-developed game based on the Hollywood blockbuster.

Comic book fans might have been taken aback by the cinematic reimagining of the Wanted comic series from creators Mark Millar and J.G. Jones, but there's little doubt that the movie, which starred Angelina Jolie and Morgan Freeman, had a vision all its own. Full of sexy assassins, global conspiracies, curving bullets, and bloody, bloody kills, the film was the kind of setting and story that just begs for a video game adaptation, and the developers at Grin have been hard at work on their latest project, Wanted: Weapons of Fate. We had a chance to play the game for the first time at a press event in San Francisco this week, and it seems like the game is bringing a good deal of the film's flair to consoles.....More

Bolt

Bolt is an action platformer that benefits from its super ambitions, even if it doesn't completely live up to them.

The Good

  • It's fun to fight as Bolt
  • The graphics are great
  • You'll be entertained for hours.

The Bad

  • There's zero story
  • Runs out of steam toward the end.

Bolt doesn't know it's just a movie-licensed game. Sure, it has a few of the telltale weaknesses: the plot is thin and the game gets repetitive toward the end. But just as Bolt the dog confounds your expectations in the film by becoming the hero you thought he wasn't, so too does the game overcome its licensed nature. Though this action platformer may be a lesser offering than many other games on shelves this holiday season, Bolt is more than a cash-in.....More

Ghostbusters: The Video Game

We came, we saw, we played a new level of Atari's new ghostbusting adventure.

Spengler. Stantz. Zeddemore. Venkman. And you. Welcome to your new job as the fifth Ghostbuster in Atari's upcoming video game adaption of the hit '80s movie series, Ghostbusters: The Video Game. The publisher, who acquired publishing rights to the game after it was sold off by Activision, showed off the latest build of the game at a recent press event. It was the first time we'd seen the game since E3, and, based on our time with the game, it seems like developers at Terminal Reality (and Red Fly Studio, which is handling the Wii version) have been keeping their heads down and focused on the ghosts, despite the game's publishing turmoil....More
